Spent mushroom blocks rejuvenate your soil and add nutrients to your compost piles.
Guided By Mushrooms has been kind enough to donate spent mushroom blocks to give to our community members, like you.
This is just another way we practice sustainability and community rejuvenation.
How to use:
-
Pick up the free blocks.
We are in partnership with Bruce Kidney, operator of the Unity Garden with this program. If you would like to get some mushroom blocks, you can pick them up at the Unity Garden.
The Unity Garden is located at: 118 Neal Ave, Dayton OH 45405. Take a right onto Geyer St. and a right onto the alleyway, and you will see the mushroom blocks.
-
Mix in soil or compost pile.
Crumble the blocks and spread in your garden soil or compost pile. Gloves may help the process and protect your hands from the substrate. The protective layer is plastic and will have to be thrown in the landfill or properly rinsed off and recycled.
-
Let nature do the work.
Across the U.S. soil is thinning and nutrients are disappearing. Studies show that when we add substances like pesticide and don’t rotate crops, it hurts our soil. Spent mushroom substrate can bring restoration. They significantly increase the number of microorganisms and enzyme activities and are overall beneficial.
